Climate Change & Environmental issues

Melting glaciers on mount Rwenzori

The Rwenzori region is facing urgent climate challenges, with melting glaciers, floods, and landslides threatening water security, agriculture, biodiversity, and community livelihoods. These environmental changes are not only eroding the natural beauty of the “Mountains of the Moon” but also destabilizing the very systems that sustain life. Without immediate action, the region risks losing its cultural heritage, tourism appeal, and the wellbeing of its people. Protecting forests, wetlands, and rivers is therefore essential to ensure food security, clean water, and disaster resilience for the communities living around the mountains.

Women Action Initiative – Uganda (WAI-U) has identified climate change and environmental protection in the Rwenzori as a priority focus area because of the disproportionate impact on women and children. Floods and displacement intensify gender inequalities, while declining agriculture and tourism undermine household incomes. By promoting reforestation, climate education, and community-led conservation, WAI-U empowers women to lead in safeguarding biodiversity and building resilience. Their work ensures that protecting the environment also means protecting livelihoods, justice, and the future of vulnerable communities.
