It’s not marked by protests or parades, but by the determined footsteps of young girls walking to school — even during their periods.

Empowering women through hands-on training in crafting reusable menstrual pads using accessible, local resources.

For years, menstruation has been a hidden barrier to education for girls in this region. Without access to sanitary products, private washrooms, or accurate information, many girls are forced to stay home during their periods. Some miss up to a week of school each month. Others drop out entirely. The result is a widening education gap, diminished self-esteem, and dreams deferred.

At the heart of this transformation is Women Action Point Initiative – Uganda (WAPI), a grassroots organization committed to restoring dignity and opportunity to girls through menstrual health support. Their mission is simple yet profound: to ensure that no girl is held back by her period. We are training girls on menstral health issues and how to make reusable pabs with very limited resources

Community-led training for women on creating sustainable menstrual hygiene products with locally available materials.

WAPI’s strategy is comprehensive and community-driven. They distribute affordable, eco-friendly reusable pads made by local women and school girls. They conduct school-based workshops that break myths, reduce stigma, and empower both girls and boys. They construct safe, private washrooms that allow girls to manage their periods with dignity. And they provide skills training for women and youth to make pads, creating jobs and fostering community ownership.

The impact is undeniable. Schools report improved attendance. Girls speak with confidence. Communities begin to shift their attitudes. Periods, once a source of shame, are becoming a symbol of strength.

WAPI is calling on partners, donors, and advocates to join the movement. With more support, they can reach thousands more girls, ensuring that menstruation never stands in the way of education.

Menstruation should never be a reason to miss school.
