Women Action Initiative – Uganda Champions Climate Action in the Rwenzori Region

The Women Action Initiative – Uganda (WAI-U) has stepped up efforts in the fight against climate change in the Rwenzori region, emphasizing the need to safeguard the region’s population, environment, and lives from the adverse effects of climate change.

The Rwenzori Mountains, dubbed the ‘Mountains of the Moon,’ are experiencing alarming rates of glacier melting due to rising temperatures. Glaciers play an important role in supplying water to rivers, which in turn supports agriculture, hydro-power generation, and domestic consumption. However, the disappearance of the region’s water tower is likely to threaten water security in the long run. At the same time, the region is experiencing irregular rainfall patterns, resulting in frequent flooding and landslides in Kasese District. This has been responsible for the destruction of property, including homes, learning institutions, and infrastructure, as well as the displacement of people.

Climate change is not just an environmental challenge; it is a gender and social justice challenge. Climate change is real, and it is impacting women and children in particular. It is impacting them in terms of food insecurity, water insecurity, and displacement. Protecting the environment in the Rwenzori region is, therefore, an empowerment challenge.

Reason why WAI-U is focusing on the Rwenzori region:

  1. Water Security: The glaciers’ melting affects rivers, which supply water for agriculture as well as consumption.
  2. Food Security: The region is experiencing inconsistent rainfall, causing soil erosion, hence low crop yields.
  3. Biodiversity: The Rwenzori region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with biodiversity that is under threat.
  4. Community Safety: The region is experiencing floods, hence displacing communities, especially women and children.
  5. Economic Stability: The region is losing revenue due to tourism, as it has a snow-capped mountain.

The main programs of WAPI include community conservation, reforestation, wetland conservation, Agroforestry as well as education about climate change. The organization is also dedicated to influencing policy, as well as empowering women to take up leadership roles in addressing climate change.

“Climate change is eroding the very foundations of life in the Rwenzori region. Protecting the environment here is protecting water, food, and the future of our communities,” said a spokesperson for WAPI
